Energy saving in a special ambience
Shopping centers, banks, museums, and other public buildings should provide customers with a special ambience, while at the same time keeping energy and maintenance costs in the as low as possible. Whether it is cooling pipes, sprinkler piping systems, potable water applications, or efficient and invisible heating and cooling systems, aquatherm products are tailored to the specific needs of public buildings and can be individually adapted to the wishes of the customer.
Spectacular architecture and
Security go hand in hand
The sprinkler system of the KTM Motohall should blend in with the architecture almost invisibly.

AQUATHERM SPRINKLERSYSTEM NAHEZU UNSICHTBAR IN DER KTM MOTOHALL INSTALLIERT
Since May 2019, visitors to Mattighofen, Upper Austria, have been able to immerse themselves in the world of motorcycle racing: after four years of planning and construction, the KTM Motohall opened here and since then has offered insights into the history of the legendary motorcycle brand with its machines, innovations and Heroes. On 2600 square meters and three levels, the fascination of KTM can be experienced up close in a state-of-the-art exhibition – all with interactive displays, virtual tours and lots of original machines. A sprinkler system ensures the safety of the visitors. Due to its special properties, it blends invisibly into the spectacular architecture of the building.
You can already see from the outside that everything revolves around racing in the KTM Motohall, which was built just a few steps away from the company’s founding place – true to the motto “READY TO RACE”: a metal construction in shape a tire track is the architectural exclamation mark of the oval structure. Inside, visitors are guided through the exhibition on a recreated steep curve and move through the building via loops and ramps. This sophisticated architecture required a particularly high degree of design freedom from the building technology and the products used.
NO CORROSION WITH POLYPROPYLENE
“In the area of fire protection, the architect’s specifications were that the sprinkler system should be integrated almost invisibly into the exposed concrete ceiling as a wet system,” explains Andreas Strobl, project manager at Accuro Brandschutzanlagen GmbH based in Mondsee, who was responsible for planning and installation . For this reason the company decided to use aquatherm red pipe. The plastic sprinkler piping system was laid as a branch and distribution line directly in the exposed concrete.
For comparison: metal sprinkler systems can only be installed in concrete with the use of special protective measures. The reason for this is corrosion, which inevitably occurs when metal and wet concrete meet. However, the special protection of metal pipe systems makes laying in concrete complex and expensive. aquatherm red pipe, on the other hand, consists of the plastic polypropylene, specifically of the material fusiolen® PP-R FS developed by aquatherm GmbH. Thanks to its flame-retardant properties (building material class B1) and its corrosion resistance, it offers a high level of security, as VDS Schadenverhütung GmbH, Europe’s largest institute for corporate security, confirms with its certification. The special material also enables it to be laid in concrete. This means that visitors to the KTM Motohall cannot see the system in the ceiling, only the total of 725 sprinkler heads give an idea of the invisible fire protection. “These were attached to the formwork panels in such a way that they create a harmonious image and meet the architect’s specifications,” says Andreas Strobl.

Another reason for using the system: “The time requirements on the construction site were very tight,” explains the expert for fire protection systems. “The quick and easy installation of aquatherm red pipe made a significant contribution to the fact that we were able to meet the time frame.” Thanks to fusion, the approximately 2200 meters of pipe were connected to form a homogeneous, cohesive and therefore safe unit. The pipe and fitting were briefly heated using the tools provided for this purpose and then simply joined together. In addition, Accuro manufactured the tubular pipes in its own prefabrication line, so that they were only transported to the construction site and installed directly. “The light weight of aquatherm red pipe – especially compared to sprinkler systems made of steel pipelines – also simplified handling on the construction site,” says Andreas Strobl.
